Even though North Georgia’s mountains have always been fertile and lush, viticulture has only recently become a magnetic drawing card to our corner of the Appalachian Mountains. For a truly spectacular and relaxing introduction to all that North Georgia has to offer in the way of the wine, take a North Georgia Wine Tour!
Winegrapes first made their appearance here in Georgia in the 1730s and first due to primitive farming techniques and then second due to the prohibition laws around the turn of the century, local wine making had a rocky start. Only since the late 20th century has the grape reemerged as a major agricultural contender and is now a major contributor to North Georgia’s agritourism industry!
VIP Travel, the parent company to VIP Southern Tours and gawinetours.com, has been in business since 1996 and is well-versed and experienced in luxury world travel. Being that their headquarters is right here in Helen, GA, of course they offer two incredible Georgia wine tours – the half day tour and the full day tour. With each tour, guests board the luxurious Georgia Wine Bus and are chauffeured from winery to winery in style, thus allowing those who choose to enjoy the fruit of the vine to leave the driving to a professional.
The full day tour with includes wine tastings at 4-5 different wineries, a delicious gourmet picnic lunch, mini history lessons throughout the day, and a private “back room tour” at Habersham Winery. The tour takes about 6 hours and is a perfect way to spend a day while vacationing at Glen-Ella Springs Inn!
If for some reason, one doesn’t feel that the full day tour is what they’re looking for, VIP Southern Tours also offers a half day Sunday afternoon tour on the “Wine Bus” that takes only three hours. This tour still includes the “back room tour” at Habersham Winery, but only 3 wineries are visited instead of 4-5 and gourmet snacks are provided, but not a full meal.
For either tour, gratuities for the driver and wine pourers at each vineyard are not included. Also, while the wine tastings are a part of the wine tour ticket, purchasing additional glasses of wine are not. Therefore, we encourage everyone who goes on the North Georgia wine tour to be sure to bring along some extra spending money as these wines are excellent and guests are sure to want to bring some of that glorious grape nectar home with them.
Each tour leaves from Habersham Winery in Helen, GA and requires advance reservations. Everyone on the tour must be 21 or over and have a valid ID indicating his or her birthdate. This is a very popular activity so be sure to make plans early as tours do tend to sell out… especially if a larger group of people desire to go.
Glen-Ella Springs Inn is proud of its North Georgia mountain heritage and the viticulture that is now prospering in these “hills”. Make your reservations today and come see agritourism at its best. We look forward to seeing you soon!
