The North Georgia Mountains come alive in the summertime! There is no better place to be than right here in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains when the days are warm and the nights are as cool as our culture. Here are some fantastic things to do in the North Georgia Mountains as you’re enjoying your stay with us at Glen-Ella Springs Inn.
How does floating over the ambling hills our corner of America sound? Helen, GA, an Alpine inspired village, is host to the 41st Annual Helen to the Atlantic Hot Air Balloon Race. Weather permitting; the race will start on Thursday, June 5th at 7:00 AM. Approximately thirty vividly colored hot air balloons will race to Georgia’s Atlantic shore, creating a floating kaleidoscope clamoring to reach their destination first. For two days after takeoff, there will continue to be hot air balloon events, including taking rides and learning more about this historic hobby. The hot air balloon festivities close on Saturday, June 7th at 7:00 PM. Be sure you’re here to see these graceful wind ships float through the air!
Of course, while you’re in Helen, you ought to tour and enjoy this charming mountain town. Even if you’re not here during the hot air balloon race, Helen is always a terrific place to shop, sight see, and enjoy the great outdoors! Take a horseback ride through the fields and woods that cover these mountains with the horses from Chattahoochee Stables. Join one of the weekly wildflower hunts at Smithgall Woods State Park. Be aware, the trails that you’ll be traversing are moderately difficult, but the effort will be so worth the reward when you spot a rare wildflower that is indigenous only to this part of the country. For a cool and refreshing activity, go tubing down the Chattahoochee River with the folks at Cool River Tubing. Fun and relaxing for all members of the family (ages 3 and up), floating along the river and through the town of Helen is just one of the amazing things to do while in the North Georgia Mountains!
Of course, there are other indoor goings-on to entertain, educate, and enlighten you during your visit. Pan for gold and gemstones in the creeks and even have your treasures cut and set into spectacular pieces of jewelry. What a fantastic and individual keepsake from your North Georgia Mountain vacation!
One last place you should visit, especially if you have young children is Babyland General Hospital! Have you ever wondered where Cabbage Patch Kids are “born”? An American icon, the Cabbage Patch Kid is modeled after Appalachian needlepoint dolls. “Artist and Creator of the Cabbage Patch Kids, Xavier Roberts, continues to work on the gardens and landscape surrounding” (helenga.org/business/babyland-general-hospital-cabbage-patch-kids). Babyland General Hospital is open year round, admission is free, and is a great family outing!
It’s plain to see that there are a myriad of fun things to do in the North Georgia Mountains. Come visit us here at Glen-Ella Springs Inn and enjoy a vacation full of beautiful scenery, outdoor adventures, and create memories that will be cherished for a lifetime.
