Just about seven miles from our front door here at Glen-Ella Springs Inn is Lake Rabun, a meandering man-made reservoir that is part of the six lake chain made by the Mathis Dam that comprises the Tallulah River. Because of its indescribable beauty and the awe inspiring majesty of the lake and the surrounding area, many people flocked to build their dream homes along the 25 mile long shore. Now there is a thriving and active community in Lake Rabun, GA that hosts many fun and family friendly events throughout the year…especially during the summertime!
Being that many people built the homes of their dreams along Lake Rabun’s wooded shores, the hills are dotted with spectacular and gracious houses. It seems that each one is more beautiful than the next and it always spurns the question, “I wonder what they look like inside?” Well, each year Lake Rabun hosts a grand tour of homes. This year’s Tour of Homes is being held on Saturday, June 14th and tickets are $45.00 per person if you purchase tickets beforehand and $60.00 the day of the tour. Five luxurious homes are open for tours and ticketholders arrive at each destination by boat. The tour lasts between two and three hours and all the fun starts at Hall’s Marina. The last tour boat of the day leaves the marina at 1:30 PM.
Fourth of July weekend is the perfect time of year for folks to enjoy all that Lake Rabun, GA has to offer. On Friday, July 4th, enjoy a masterful fireworks display from the shore or on a boat in the middle of the lake. What a lovely and all-American way to spend the anniversary of our nation’s independence from England!
For those who love to run and are early risers, the Rabun Ramble takes place the very next day. A marathon qualifier, this 5K or 10K road race is a perennial favorite for locals and travelers, alike. All proceeds from the race go to the Lake Rabun Foundation (LRA) who, in turn, supports various local charities such as Habitat for Humanity, Rabun Christian Food Ministry, and the Lakemont-Wiley Volunteer Fire Department. “But the lion’s share of the LRA Foundation money goes to the Lake Rabun Foundation Scholarship Program. Since its inception in 1987, the Fund has helped over 100 Rabun County high school seniors attend college. This year more than $50,000 will be awarded to 28 Rabun County students for college or technical school tuition. They are chosen based on academic achievement, financial need, character, and community service” (http://rabunramble.com/thecause.html). Registration is $25.00 per person if received before July 1st and $30.00 after that until the day of the race.
