About the A Blooming Affair at Hamilton Gardens
Hamilton Gardens is one of the best attractions in North Georgia! came as a gift from Fred and Hazel Hamilton, who loved azaleas and rhododendrons. In the 1950s, Fred Hamilton bought a home in the Atlanta area and discovered tons of wonderful native plants on the grounds. He created a lush plot and incorporated many other varieties of flowers, especially rhododendrons, from all over the world. For years, the Hamiltons maintained two thriving gardens, one in Atlanta and the other in Towns County. They shared the beauty of their creation with visitors and invited guests to tour the grounds.
As the property continued to grow, the upkeep became challenging. Mr. Hamilton realized he could no longer take care of his extensive collection and began looking for a place to relocate his flowers. In 1981, he donated his rhododendrons to Towns County, and they were transported to their current location to be cared for and appreciated by thousands of visitors each year. Today, many of the plants at the Hamilton Gardens are direct results of Mr. Hamilton’s hard work.
The Daffodil Project
The property takes part in the Daffodil Project each year to help honor and remember the children who lost their lives during the Holocaust. This international project aims to plant 1.5 million daffodils in honor of the 1.5 million children who perished during the Holocaust. Be sure to visit and see the 600 daffodil bulbs planted in the Memorial Flower Bed!
Explore the Grounds
This popular spot is open all year, but peak blooming season takes place between early April and late May. From 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., guests are welcome to visit and see one of the largest collections of Hiawassee rhododendrons in the state of Georgia. Spend the weekend strolling through and taking in the aroma of fresh flowers. Guided walking and golf cart tours are available by appointment. During the spring season, you can even visit the greenhouse and purchase a beautiful plant of your own to take home!
Admission is free, but donations are appreciated. All donations help preserve and maintain Mr. Hamilton’s historic grounds.
