An Insider’s Guide to the Georgia Wine Highway

Those who know North Georgia well know that this region produces some of the country’s finest wines! The mountain valleys and rolling meadows of the state’s northernmost counties are perfect for growing and harvesting premium grapes. That’s why there are several locally owned and operated vineyards and wineries open for business along the Georgia Wine Highway! Below, we’ve listed everything you need to know about this special route in North Georgia.

Everything You Need to Know About the Georgia Wine Highway

History of the Georgia Wine Highway

In the year 1900, Georgia was one of the country’s most profitable producers of fine wine. When the United States Congress overrode President Woodrow Wilson’s veto of the Volstead Act in 1919, and when prohibition ensued, the Georgia wine industry floundered. As a result of this troublesome period, wine production did not return to the region until the 1980s. Today, the industry has seen a resurgence in success and business is booming for North Georgia’s numerous wineries and tasting rooms!

About the Route and Schedule

Sponsored by the nonprofit Georgia Winegrowers Association, the Wine Highway is made up of a unique collection of North Georgia wineries and vineyards. All locations are within relatively close proximity of one another, and visitors take advantage of this by choosing their own route and stopping by each tasting room over the course of approximately 10 days. Each March, participating Georgia Wine Association members vary, so no two Wine Highway events are alike!

The best way to enjoy the Georgia Wine Highway Weekend is to purchase an all-inclusive pass. Passes are available for purchase at each participating location and through the Georgia Winegrowers Association; this is a better deal than sampling wines at each individual location! Each pass holder has plenty of time to enjoy all of the complex wines, as well as the splendor of the surrounding landscape. Each March, the Wine Highway festivities occupy an entire week, including two weekends! The $75 ticket includes a keepsake wine glass and access to each participating vineyard.
