Learn About the Best Things to Do in Sautee Nacoochee, Georgia

There are plenty of charming towns and communities to visit in the mountains of North Georgia, including Helen, Clarkesville, and Clayton. But one of the nearest communities to us, which may not yet be on your radar, is Sautee Nachoochee, Georgia. At the heart of this unique area is the Sautee Nacoochee Indian Mound, a unique historical site that’s worth visiting.

The nearby Hardman Farm Historic Site features the iconic Sautee Nacoochee Indian Mound, a striking reminder of the region’s past. The Indian Mound is just a small part of this area’s unique culture and historical attraction, though. You’ll also want to visit the Sautee Nacoochee Cultural Center, where visitors can browse art galleries, learn about the area’s rich Native American and pioneer history, and catch live performances. The area is also home to unique shops, local markets, and cozy cafes that make for a perfect day of exploring.

The region is also rich with scenic drives, hiking trails, and historic sites that showcase the area’s deep Appalachian roots. Importantly, it also offers a wonderful counterpoint to the Bavarian-inspired streets of Helen, where you’ll find a much more lively atmosphere. It’s an easygoing destination that captures the best of North Georgia without the hustle and bustle – just like the charming accommodations at Glen-Ella Springs.

A Few of the Best Things to Do in Sautee Nacoochee, Georgia

North Georgia is peppered with so many charming mountain towns, but Sautee Nacoochee is one of our favorites. This unincorporated community is named after the Anglican pronunciations of “Sawate” and “Nokose,” two words that were commonly used in the Muscogee Creek Native American dialect. Today, it’s a hidden gem featuring plenty of off-the-beaten-path points of interest. Here are just a few of them!

  1. One of the most popular things to do in Sautee Nacoochee is to visit the Nacoochee Indian Mound. This low-key site is more of a photo opportunity than an activity, but it’s an important Sautee-Nacoochee historical site nonetheless. Be sure to snap a photo of this gazebo-adorned mound surrounded by beautiful pasture.
  2. Visit the Sautee-Nacoochee Center. This performing arts center is dedicated to preserving history and culture and showcasing the local performing arts community. This entertainment hub hosts fun community events and activities.
  3. While you’re at the center, artisans and craft lovers should visit the renowned Folk Pottery Museum of Northeast Georgia
  4. For a touch of the region’s history, don’t miss the Stovall Mill Covered Bridge
  5. Another great historical site in Sautee Nacoochee is the Hardman Farm State Historic Site
  6. Visit the Old Sautee Store. Like Glen-Ella Springs Inn, the Old Sautee Store dates back to the 1800s! This historic site has been a general store, post office, and, now, a museum. Be sure to pick up some fresh bread and vintage drinks from the Old Sautee Market!
