It’s almost ski season and we couldn’t be more excited! Some people think that southerners don’t know how to appreciate a good ski slope, but we beg to differ. Although skiing in Georgia may be a thing of the past, there are plenty of great options for skiing near Georgia, and we’re here to tell you about them. If you’re looking for skiing in Georgia, near Georgia or outside of Georgia in the Southeastern United States, we’re here to help. Here are some of the best ski resorts within driving distance from our North Georgia bed and breakfast.
Sapphire Valley Resort
Less than 55 miles from Glen-Ella Springs, Sapphire Valley Resort in western North Carolina offers a picturesque setting for skiing near Georgia. Sapphire Valley is nestled in one of the most scenic corners of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The small Sapphire Valley Ski Area is perfect for families looking for a safe and relaxing ski outing near Georgia. Lift lines are typically short, if there are any lines at all, and ski lessons are given one-on-one to ensure the success of beginner skiers.
Cataloochee Ski Area
The Cataloochee Ski Area is located in Maggie Valley NC, 90 miles from Glen-Ella Springs. Cataloochee is one of the oldest ski resorts in the Southeast and features 18 runs. There is terrain to suit all skill levels including three expert runs. Trails are 44% Beginner, 39% Intermediate, and 17% Advanced to Expert. Many say the snow conditions are better at Cataloochee than the surrounding resorts due to its higher elevation in the Great Smoky Mountains. When traveling to Cataloochee Ski Area, be sure to use Google Maps; GPS devices and other mapping services have been known to lead first-time visitors astray.
Ober Gatlinburg is only 107 miles from our bed and breakfast in the North Georgia Mountains. This premier ski resort offers nine runs, mostly beginner and intermediate slopes, but also a couple of black diamonds. The resort also features a freestyle terrain park. Ober Gatlinburg is beautifully situated high above Gatlinburg TN in the scenic Smoky Mountains. If you want to check out Gatlinburg while you’re in the area, an Aerial Tramway connects the resort to the town of Gatlinburg for shopping and dining without getting back in your car.
