A Romantic Getaway to Georgia Wine Country

If you love the sounds of a fun, beautiful, wine-focused getaway, then it’s time to plan a romantic getaway to North Georgia wine country. There are around 70 wineries in the state of Georgia, and the majority of them are concentrated in the state’s northern reaches. In fact, within about 45 minutes of our North Georgia Bed and Breakfast, you’ll find thirty North Georgia wineries – a number that’s growing all the time!

North Georgia wine country is about 90 minutes north of Atlanta and around 3 hours from Charlotte, NC, making it a quick and easy retreat away from the ordinary. The wineries and vineyards of North Georgia are nestled in the shadows of the Blue Ridge Mountains, making a stunning backdrop for your wine-laden weekend away. In the eyes of many wine lovers around the country, North Georgia wine country is seen as a relative newcomer, but there’s a long history of winemaking here.

In the era before prohibition, Georgia was thought to be the sixth-largest producer of wine grapes. The industry languished up until the early 1980s, when business once again began to flourish. Today, Georgia’s wine industry is positively thriving, and this year promises to be another delicious season in North Georgia wine country. As delicious as local wines are, though, they represent just one of the many things to do in North Georgia. Place yourself in the heart of this incredible area and enjoy one of the most romantic getaways in North Georgia. Book your room at our romantic North Georgia Bed and Breakfast today!

Explore The Best of North Georgia Wine Country

Though North Georgia has long been considered a top destination for outdoor enthusiasts who come to hike and relax in this scenic paradise, it’s increasingly common to see guests come here just for a taste of North Georgia wine country. Of course, no matter the reason for your visit, a relaxed afternoon tasting local wines is hardly something to argue with.

The most common type of grape grown in Georgia vineyards is muscadine, and most of the wines produced here are fruit-forward sweet wines – particularly those made with the signature Georgia peaches! There are also several wineries throughout North Georgia wine country that focus on producing European-style wines, so there’s truly something here for just about every wine enthusiast.

North Georgia wine country spans the entirety of the northern part of the state, and planning a tasting journey up here can feel daunting. To help, we’ve curated a list of ten of our favorite North Georgia wineries, all within an hour or less from our North Georgia Bed and Breakfast.

  1. For many wine drinkers, North Georgia wine country is synonymous with Dahlonega, and that’s because it was the first area in Georgia to be given specific viticultural area boundaries. There are some great wineries there, but our most recommended is Kaya Vineyard and Winery. It was one of the first wineries in North Georgia in the Dahlonega area and is the largest. It’s a great stop if you’re heading north from Atlanta on your way to our North Georgia Bed and Breakfast.
  2. One of our favorite destinations in North Georgia wine country is Yonah Mountain Vineyards. The wines here are delicious and varied, including Chardonnay, Merlot, Malbec, and more. We highly recommend their wine cave tour, and you can’t leave without admiring the stunning mountain views from here.
  3. Another of our favorite stops in North Georgia wine country is 12 Spies Vineyards. You don’t have to travel far to get there, the sunset views are exquisite, and the range of wines to taste will keep everyone satisfied.
  4. You can also enjoy exquisite mountain views from Terra Incognita Vineyard. This stunning vineyard overlooks the Blue Ridge Mountains and is surrounded by thousands of protected acres of forest.
  5. Head down the road about 20 minutes, and you’ll find another must-see winery in North Georgia, Tiger Mountain Vineyards. This gem has won several awards, particularly for its Malbec and Cabernet Franc.
  6. Another close-by favorite is Stonewall Creek Vineyards, which produces a delicious lineup of wines from estate-grown grapes. They also have a second wine label, Standing Deer Cellar, produced using non-estate-grown grapes.
  7. If you’re looking for Tuscan-style wines, you can’t go wrong with Serenity Cellars. It’s a boutique winery in North Georgia wine country known for its small-batch reds.
  8. If you plan to visit the Bavarian town of Helen, you might as well do some wine tasting there, too. A great spot near Helen is Habersham Winery, one of the oldest wineries in North Georiga.
  9. If you plan to be in the Cleveland area for the day, don’t miss a tasting at one of the newer wineries in the area, CeNita Winery.
  10. Finally, for another tasting in the Cleveland area, head to Cottage Vineyards & Winery, offering wine lovers gorgeous mountain views and plenty of delicious sips in their glass.
