Hike to the Top of Brasstown Bald in Georgia
From the plunging depths of Tallulah Gorge State Park to the towering peaks of the Brasstown Bald Trail, you can expect one epic adventure after another. But as adventurous as it can be in the North Georgia Mountains, you can also find plenty of time and space to carve out a quieter, more tranquil respite away from busy crowds and loud noise. Whether you’re checking these big adventures off your bucket list or seeking quiet respite, we can’t wait to share the best of North Georgia with you this summer, starting with the Brasstown Bald.
Brasstown Bald, the pinnacle of Georgia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, marks the state’s highest point at 4,784 feet. The Brasstown Bald Trail, near Hiawassee, attracts hikers from across the region, each drawn by its exceptional views and the rewarding experience of reaching Georgia’s apex. To reach the summit, you’ll follow the challenging Brasstown Bald Trail. It’s a short hike, at just over 1/2 mile, but don’t let the length fool you. It’s steep, and the brisk pace of the ascent makes it an endurance-challenging trek. The elevation gain in that short distance is around 500 feet, but the view at the top of the Brasstown Bald Trail is well worth the effort. If you aren’t sure you’re up to the steep climb, a shuttle service will take you to the top so you can still soak in the views.
At the summit, hikers are rewarded with a 360-degree vista that is truly unparalleled. On clear days, the view extends over four states, offering a breathtaking perspective on the vast expanse of the Southern Appalachians. You can sometimes even see the skyline of Atlanta from here. The observation deck at the top provides the perfect vantage point to soak in these views, with informative placards that help visitors identify various peaks and landmarks in the distance. Along the trail, hikers are treated to a variety of flora and fauna native to the region, with the changing seasons offering a dynamic backdrop that evolves from the lush greens of summer to the vibrant hues of autumn.
The Brasstown Bald Trail is the highlight of any visit here, but it’s not the only hike you can take. There are other trails that leave from the Brasstown Bald Visitor Center, including the 5-5-mile Arkaquah Foot Trail that ends at Track Rock Gap, the 4-5mile Jacks Knob Foot Trail that leads to the Appalachian Trail (and even more hiking!), and the 5.8-mile Wagon Train Foot Trail that ends at Young Harris College. Whether you’re an avid hiker seeking the thrill of a challenging climb or simply a nature lover searching for stunning views, Brasstown Bald is a great place to enjoy hiking.
